Boys, grades 3-8
Girls, grades 3-8
The St. Matthew Lacrosse program is a CLUB program and it is known as SMMLA, or St. Matthew Mustangs Lacrosse Association. Since it is a club program, and because lacrosse teams are organized for league play by dual grades (grades 3/4 , 5/6, 7/8), it is open to St. Matthew students as young as 3rd grade. While SMMLA is a club program, it is for the benefit of St. Matthew students and parishioners first and foremost. School of the Resurrection PSR students may be eligible. Students in other schools around the diocese may also be eligible to participate under certain circumstances.
Approximately $140 (cost is slightly higher than other Diocesan sports to cover indoor field rental costs during early Spring)
Credit card via Paypal. (You can log into a Paypal account, or pay without logging in.)
Registration will generally occur the first two weeks of January.
|Season Length:||Early March through late May/early June|
|Tryouts||Late January, if needed|
|Games Begin:||Late March|
We will compete against other local lacrosse teams around Columbus. Grades may be combined in order to field a complete team.
Practices are scheduled 2 or 3 times per week. Since all our coaches are volunteers, we try to accommodate the coaches’ work schedules as best we can. Practice times can begin after school at 2:30, or they can start later in the evening. Duration is usually 90 minutes. A final practice schedule will be determined in late February. Weather-permitting, practices are held at the St. Matthew Athletic Fields. In early Spring, practices may be held indoors at Resolute Athletic Center, or another indoor practice space.
Uniforms & Equipment
- Uniforms will be provided by SMMLA. SMMLA players will be responsible for their own equipment.
- The mandatory equipment for boys is: lax stick, helmet, mouthguard, cleats, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, and a protective cup. Gently-used and new equipment can be purchased locally from Play It Again Sports or Dick’s. You can also purchase starter sets or individual equipment online at: Lax.com, LacrosseMonkey.com, sportstop.com, etc. The advantage to buying locally is that your son can try on all of the equipment. Borrowing gear from family, friends, neighbors, etc. is strongly encouraged. Boys love to quickly trade up on their gear, so last year’s players may also have gently-used gear available too.
Games will be played at various locations around Columbus.
