YOUTH CHOIR

Purpose:

To provide the children and youth of our Parish an opportunity to contribute to the liturgy in a unique way and to grow in fellowship with other youth in the Parish.  Participation in the choir helps to foster an appreciation for music as a form of prayer, creates an understanding of the importance of music in celebrating and rejoicing in God's Word, and promotes a deepened respect for our Catholic faith and traditions.

Activities:

The Youth Choir sings at the 12:00 noon Mass at least once a month during the year, and on specified Holy Days.

In addition to contributing musically to our weekly liturgies, the choir also sings for televised masses, performs occasionally at area nursing homes, and participates in local community events (such as marching in the local Fourth of July Parade).  the Choir also provides opportunities for fellowship  through pizza parties and other social events.

Any student who is interested in singing or in playing a musical instrument with the Choir is welcome to join at any time.

Background:

There have been many efforts throughout the history of our parish to involve our children in the liturgy through music. The St. Matthew’s Youth Choir officially was formed in September 1999 to further enhance the wonderful tradition of musical celebration at St. Matthew Parish.  Since its inception, the Choir has developed an extensive repertoire, ranging from traditional Latin chants to contemporary worship hymns.

Responsibilities:
This ministry is responsible for: coordinating all activities of the Youth Choir.

There is an open length of service for this ministry.  Weekly rehearsals are held every Tuesday, and a schedule for Youth Choir rehearsals is distributed at the first rehearsals in early September.  Announcements of choir rehearsal dates and times are also listed in the weekly bulletin.  No dues are required for this special ministry.
