YOUNG ELDERLY

Purpose:

The Young Elderly has been in existence for many years at St. Matthew. The ministry serves the elderly in our parish by sponsoring opportunities for fellowship and enrichment in a casual and informal setting.

Activities:

For the host and hostess, the ministry involves the loving gift of self so that others may enjoy an evening of friendship and community.

For the elderly, the evening is one of sharing the pleasures of a meal together, the nurturing of friendships, sharing experiences, and a friendly card game.

This is a wonderful opportunity to provide fun for the seniors in our parish. Hosting an event is open to any individual, couple, family, or group.

Background:

This ministry coordinates an event, for the seniors of our parish and neighboring parishes and communities to enjoy, by providing a potluck dinner together and an evening of sharing and euchre.

The host and hostess, usually a younger couple and/or family in the parish, takes responsibility for all of the arrangements including setup, cooking the main entree (ham provided by the parish), other dinner details, and cleanup.

They also give generously of themselves to the seniors who attend. Of course, the attendees minister to one another by their presence, sharing, and participation in the activities.

Responsibilities:
This ministry is responsible for: Recruitment of members; developing and coordinating Young Elderly events; and maintaining procedural documentation relating to this ministry.
Commitment:

The length of service for this ministry is open. The dues are twenty-five cents each month for prizes and twenty-five cents for coffee.

Meetings are monthly throughout the year, usually on the fourth Monday of the month. Changes are announced in the bulletin and posted on our parish website.

Interview with the "Young Elderly" by Tony D'Elia

"The title is scary" says, Paul Rovnak.  "We say it's for those who like to cook, or those who enjoy eating."

Rovnak is talking about St. Matthew's, "Young Elderly".  It's a night of potluck dining and progressive euchre.   Top prize is $1.25--no not $125.00, but a dollar twenty-five!

St. Matthew provides a ham and the guests provides the rest----anything from fancy desserts to a bag of chips.  It happens on the fourth Monday of the month (except for holidays), and it is held in the St. Anthony Room (located in the basement of the church).  They meet at 5:30pm with dinner over by six , and then it's eight tables of euchre until 9:30pm.   Participants are from various religious denominations, and they come from all over the Columbus area.

Mary Jo Byrum joins Joan and Paul Rovnak in hosting the group.  "Some people do not know how to play euchre, but there is always someone willing to teach the game, " said Mary Jo.

The get-togethers began in the '70's with the St. Matthew Women's Club.  It was called, "The Red Carpet Treatment", and it began as a way of honoring parishioners age 55 and over.  The founders were:  Gerry Murphy, the late Bob Sauter, and the late Bonnie Grossman. Others involved were:  Bob Smoliniskj, Shirley Behrend and Ann Connor.  Rovanak also said there were "unofficial leaders " along the way.

New members are always welcome.  Why not dine with some of the area's wisest citizens on the fourth Monday of the month?
