RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY

Purpose:

To promote and defend the right to life of all human beings from conception until natural death. This is in recognition of the belief that all humans are created in God’s Image and Likeness.

It is our goal to increase our parish’s understanding of the Church’s teachings and its awareness of greater community needs regarding Pro-Life issues. Prayer is an important part of our focus.

Activities:

We lead a Pro-Life Rosary on the first Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Members of our group regularly join others in prayer vigils outside of abortion clinics around Columbus.

We participate in fund-raisers to help support other Pro-Life groups providing service to the community. We maintain a bulletin board at the Church doors to bring a variety of Pro-Life issues to the eyes of the churchgoers. We hope with increased members, to work with St. Matthew School and Parish School of Religion to provide age-appropriate curriculum desired by the teachers.

Background:

Our faith calls us to be Pro-Life in our beliefs and our actions. Since the 1973 Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion in our country, dedicated individuals, congregations, and organizations have fought to protect the right to life which God gives to each of us. St. Matthew’s Respect Life Committee was started in the fall of 1999.

We will focus our efforts on the following: Prayer-This is the spiritual foundation for our efforts. We believe that through prayer and God, all is possible; Education-We will reach out to our parish, community, and world to provide testimony for the Pro-Life movement; We will promote the understanding of the Church’s theological teachings regarding these issues; We will know, teach, and live the Catholic Theology of Life; Ministry-We will reach out in Christ’s love to provide comfort, compassion, and alternatives to those affected by the culture of death.

Responsibilities:
This ministry is responsible for: Recruitment of committee members and prayer teams; training and preparation of the prayer teams; scheduling and transportation for prayer vigils as required; and maintaining procedural documentation relating to this ministry.
Commitment:

Commitment and length of service are open. Prayer to change the hearts and minds of the people of the world is a most critical need in this ministry. Opportunities abound for individual involvement on an active level.
