Meals on Wheels

Purpose:
Meals on Wheels is a new ministry which began in January, 2006. St. Matthew volunteers team up with Life Care Alliance to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound Gahanna residents on Thursdays.
Activities:
Delivery of food to homebound on Thursdays.
Background:
The concept of Meals-on-Wheels is a British concept that originated in the Second World War. In 1939, many people who had lost their homes and consequently their abilities to cook for themselves were supplied meals by the Women's Volunteer Civil Service. The women also brought refreshments in canteens to service men during the war. These canteens soon earned the name of "meals on wheels." The concept of Meals on Wheels, taking food to those in need, was adopted in North America in the 1960's.

Meals on Wheels, home delivered meals of Franklin and Madison Counties in Ohio provides hot nutritious meals to elderly senior citizens and handicapped persons who are unable to provide meals for themselves.  A caring volunteer or staff delivery person delivers the meals to the home.  This daily in-home assistance allows the frail homebound person to live independently in his or her own home.

Life Care Alliance is proud to assist older adults who are 60 years of age or older, who live in their homes or reside in a senior citizen facility.

Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist Life Care Alliance to deliver meals to homebound Gahanna residents.
Commitment:
Because of the number of volunteers, the commitment is only once every 2 months.   For more information, contact Mrs. Mary Thompson (614)471-0212 or mthompson@stmatthew.net.
